3com enhanced IR update

3com have quietly released an upgrade to PalmOS. This is for PalmOS 3 only, as it involves IR support, and implements the IrCOMM portion of IrDA. The Palm III was originally released with IR, and IR communications between Palm devices, but without IrDA being implemented. The significance of this patch is that it shows that 3com are starting to implement IrDA, which may have further implications this year, when new models are due to be released.

The first product to make use of this patch is HandPhone (from SmartCode Software). HandPhone, rather like PhoneMan for the Psion Series 5, which is discussed later, sends and received SMS messages, and can manage a phone book in suitable phones, although the early version of HandPhone that was supplied with the Option Snap-On mobile phone adaptor could only manage SMS. HandPhone will work with the Ericsson SH888, Nokia 9000 and 8810, and the Ericsson 688 and 788 with the DI-27 adaptor.
