Following up their launch last June of David Pogue's 'PalmPilot: The Ultimate Guide', a very handy introduction to Palm's for users, O'Reilly have continued their concentrated effort on Palm Computing with 'Palm Programming: The Developer's Guide', by Neil Rhodes and Julie McKeehan. The authors have a track record of writing for PDA developer, with their earlier books for the Newton. It covers developing for PalmOS using the official development environment, MetroWerk's CodeWarrior, concentrating on the C++ code rather than the development environment, and so should be equally applicable to developers using Windows or Macintosh versions of CodeWarrior, or even of the gcc development environment. It only gives glancing mention to other development tools for PalmOS, so won't be suitable for developers using CASL, PocketC or Satellite Forms (for example). The book is written in O'Reilly's admirably authoritative, yet easy to read, house style, without irrelevant digressions. My understanding is that Palm Computing are going to adopt it as their official developer's tutorial. A CD is included containing all the sample code used in the book, plus CodeWarrior Lite and the gcc developer resource. CodeWarrior Lite only allows you to use existing projects, and will not let you add new files to existing projects. |
