Newton Updates

Apple have released new versions of the Newton OS (update 717260 for MP2000 or update for eMate 737246), NIE (Newton Internet Enabler) 2.0 and NetHopper 3.2 from AllPen Software, for MessagePad 2000, 2100 and eMate users. The OS update improves memory heap management, and should reduce the number of crashes (that were plaguing me with NIE, see my column in issue 36 for October 1997). It also offers an improved mechanism for adjusting contrast, which gives users much finer control over the precise level of screen contrast.

NIE now works with an ethernet card, the Farallon (now called Netopia Inc, but details at http://www.farallon.com/product/en/newtoncard.html ) PN595-TP, and supports TCP/IP access over ethernet networks. The Farallon card is reasonably priced, and should be available for around 80 (or just under). NIE 2.0 also improves the interface for modem connections, with multiple retries and alternate numbers, as well as a log window to see what is going on. NetHopper is produced by AllPen Software, who have recently been purchased by Spyglass. Full details are on http://www.allpen.com , but this is a mainly catch up upgrade to include support for authentication, proxy servers and loading packages directly over the web, as well as a number of bug fixes.
