Feralas (Alliance)

There aren’t really any quests leading in to Feralas, so you can come here more or less whenever you are ready; 42/43 would be about the earliest that would be worthwhile. However, try to get: Yeh’kinya – Screecher Spirits, from Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris before arriving if you can. If not, there are several points at which you will want to visit Gadgetzan while questing in Feralas, so collect it then.

Feathermoon Stronghold

The first quests are on the same island as Feathermoon Stronghold, and the island to the south (the Isle of Dread). Collect: Shandris Feathermoon – The Ruins of Solarsal and Latronicus Moonspear – The Missing Courier. The second stage for the courier is also in the Stronghold: Ginro Hearthkindle – The Missing Courier. Head more or less due south from the stronghold; the first checkpoint is the Solarsal Gazebo, a dark building on the north side of the ruins at 26,52. Then back to Feathermoon for: Shandris Feathermoon – Against the Hatecrest. The naga you need are all along the south coast of the island, and are 40 to 45. When you have completed this, you will get: Latronicus Moonspear – Against Lord Shalzaru. He is on the NW corner of the Isle of Dread, in a cave. The respawn here is a lot faster than usual. Shalzaru is level 47, with two guards level 45. I just fought my way to the pond where he is on a small island, and cleared the two or three naga in the water. If you are careful, it is possible to single pull the two guards, but odds are good that you will get Shalzaru with one guard. Next is: Latronicus Moonspear – Delivering the Relic; save it for when you have a couple more quests running to Darnassus.

Next, cross over to the main land for Screecher Spirits. On the first section of land south of the dock, there are several rogue vale screechers; kill and use the rod until the quest is done.

For the missing courier, you may be able to do this at a low level, especially if you can sneak effectively. You are looking for a wrecked row boat, which is hidden in the water some way south of the landing, at 45,64. This is just by a small notch on the coastline, south of the river. On the shore is a small green shard, and a broken crate; you can’t see these if you hug the mountain line, you have to come closer. The coastline is populated with level 47-49 elementals, and in the water roam 48-49 elite giants. It is possible to find the boat without aggroing, if you are very careful. The next quests in the sequence are: Wrecked Row Boat – Boat Wreckage, then Ginro Hearthkindle – The Knife Revealed, and Quintis Jonespyre – Psychometric Reading, back in Feathermoon. This gives you Ginro Hearthkindle – The Woodpaw Gnolls. See further down for details.

Leatherworking

I have put this separately, as most of the quests here take a very long time and need a lot of inventory space to complete; as well as requiring the leatherworking profession!

Pratt McGrubben – Wild Leather Armor. Pratt is north west of the inn, in a small gazebo near the flight master. He is hard to find if you don’t already know where he is. Pratt will give you several Wild Leather quests, in two main stages. For the first stage, you will need a total of 88 thick leather, 40 turtle scales and three wildvine. For the second stage, you need 104 thick leather, 72 turtle scales, and 4 wildvine. This is hard work, but is required to get the wild leather patterns that you would need if you were to take up tribal leatherworking.

Thick leather is easy to find, and there are a number of camps in Feralas and elsewhere that will give them. You can get most of the leather required, however, while farming the turtle scales. There are three main places that will give turtle scales: Dustwallow Marsh, close to Theramore, both on the islands to the south, and along the shore to the north; turtles here are high 30s. Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris, low 40s turtles – the drop rate here is much higher than in Dustwallow, and has vendors in the port, so is probably the preferred spot. The last place is the coast in Hinterlands, where turtles are 48-50. Wildvine is a drop from trolls; two good camps are the higher trolls in Stranglethorn Vale, near the Arena and on the coast near there; and the several camps in the Hinterlands.

The Wilderness

You should still have Ginro Hearthkindle – The Woodpaw Gnolls. Take Angelas Moonbreeze – The High Wilderness, and Pratt McGrubben – The Mark of Quality, if you haven’t already done it. Pratt is hard to find, at the back of the inn.

Back to the mainland, take the road heading south then east. The first point at which the road drops back down to the grassland is just north of Feral Scar Vale. These yetis drop the hides for The Mark of Quality, and are level 41-44.

Continuing east, the next camp are the ogres, south of the road, just by the Verdandis River. Levels are 43-46. The brutes are mainly at the north end, then warlocks further south, and shamans mixed in with mage-lords and battlemasters just north of the large building. Shamans are relatively rare, and will take the longest to complete, so head directly to them, and catch the brutes and warlocks while waiting for the next spawn.

Still going east, a short distance past the river to the north are the Grimtotem taurens. Just to the west and north of their first village is a lake. You can reach this without having to fight in the village. On the path to the west of the lake is: Kindal Moonweaver – Freedom for all Creatures. This is a timed quest, with a 6 minute timer, so don’t pick it up immediately. The drakes are in a cage at the south west of the village, and when released will take the path east through the village. They will help you fight, so this is perfectly possible solo; the Grimtotems are 41-44. First kill the several taurens around the cage, and the one to the SW, and then start the quest; you can kill a few to the east if you are quick, but take too long and you may have a problem with respawns. Help them kill along the path to the east as they escape. Kindal won’t respawn back on the ledge until about 30 seconds after the timer has run down.

Jer’kai Moonweaver – Doling Justice. Kill lots of Grimtotems. When this is completed, you get a quest to run to Darnassus, which gives a large reputation boost. You should complete this with Latronicus Moonspear – Delivering the Relic, and Troyas Moonbreeze – In Search of Knowledge. This last quest runs you around in Darnassus for a couple of stops, then sends you to Gadgetzan for Curgle Cranklehop – The Super Snapper FX. The next step is in the Hinterlands, so try to combine this with the leatherworking quest if you are doing it. Gammerita is a level 48 elite turtle, who wanders the beach in the Hinterlands. These turtles are aggressive, by the way. Taking the turtles photograph will aggro the turtle, so deal with that somehow – dying and buying the resurrection at the spirit healer can save a lot of travel time. Back in Rut’theran Village, you will finally get: Daryn Lightwind – Return to Troyas.

Back in Feralas, keep going further east. To the south of the path, east of the Grimtotems, there are some gnolls. Roughly at 73,56 there is a raised camp of gnolls directly south of the small lake, with a large tree. Barely visible on the tree trunk, tucked away between some campsite furniture, there is a clickable spot on the tree trunk, at gnoll chest height. Large Leather Backpacks – The Writhing Deep. You also get the quest: Undelivered Parcel – Thalanaar Delivery, from the backpacks contents.

There is one final quest in the wilds, which can be repeated as many times as you wish. In the south, between the ogres and the yetis, there are many hippogriffs. On the south and west walls of this area are some nests, usually hidden at the back of the hills; I am aware of one nest on the west wall, one by the lake, and at least ten at various places on the south wall. These nests can all contain a large egg that you can click open. Take these (one at a time, unfortunately) to Curgle Cranklehop in Gadgetzan. The quest she has for turning in these eggs has some very nice rewards, and the drops from the griffs are also quite valuable (to sell to vendors, mostly). Turn around time, to hearthstone to Gadgetzan, sell, turn in an egg, fly back to Feathermoon Sanctuary and run back to pick up an egg is roughly 25 minutes.

The Writhing Deep quest is bugged. You can reach the nest, which has two main chambers, and kill insects to reach it, but the pod (in the east chamber, I think?) isn’t clickable. It may be possible to do this after a server restart, like several other bugged quests.

Sprite Darter

Once you have completed Jer’kai Moonweaver – Doling Justice, in Darnassus, a new quest opens up: Jer’kai Moonweaver – An Orphan Looking for a Home. You need 2 elixirs of fortitude for the next stage of this quest, so go collect them from the Auction House at a convenient time. You need to go to Quentin, in the Shimmering Flats in Thousand Needles; he is the night elf by the stands at the racetrack. Quentin – The Newest member of the Family, this send you to Agnar Beastamer in Arathi Highlands, and is a timed quest (one hour). If you have the flight paths already, you can get there in 20 minutes. Agnar Beastamer – Food for Baby. Silvermane stalkers are found close to the coast in the Hinterlands, level 47/48. After that, you have your sprite darter pet.

North Feralas

At the mainland dock is a goblin, Zorbin Fandazzle, with two quests. Take both: Zorbin Fandazzle – Fuel for the Zapping, and Zorbin Fandazzle – Zapped Giants. Kill elementals, roughly 46-48, until you have enough drops; this quest is repeatable for more faction. As you are running around, use the zapper to click the giants. This reduces their hit points (and possibly does more) so that they aren’t really elite, although the gold border remains; a zapped giant is no harder than anything else level 47ish. This quest is also repeatable. When you have completed both parts, you will be able to access Zorbin as a vendor.

You now need to make sure that you have: Troyas Moonbreeze – The Stave of Equinex and Pratt McGrubben – Improved Quality. Mobs for this section are 46-48 at the yeti cave, and 48-50 harpies. The Rage Scar yeti cave is east of the path, half way to Desolace; you need to pass level 48-50 beasts to reach it. While killing here, a Pristine Yeti Hide should eventually drop, which is another quest with Pratt.

Further north, to the west of the path, is the Ruins of Ravenwind. At the four corners of the ruins are clickable flames; the one to the northeast has to be reached by some easy jumps between platforms. Once you have the four flames (Flame of Lahassa 37,12, Flame of Imbel 39,9, Flame of Byltan 38,15, Flame of Samha 40,12), in the middle of the ruins in the lower area is a stepped pyramid, which is the Equinex Monolith. Go to this and first click Troyas’ Staff, then click the monolith. Make sure you have clicked and completed all the quest dialogs that come up, then return to Troyas for completion.

OOX-22/FE Distress Beacon – Find OOX-22/FE! 45 (53,56)
Homing Robot OOX-22/FE – Rescue OOX-22/FE! 45 (escort)
Shandris Feathermoon – Rise of the Silithid 46
Zukk’ash Pod – Escaping the Hive 46
Ginro Hearthkindle – A Hero’s Welcome 46
Rockbiter – The Giant Guardian 49
Shay Leafrunner – Wandering Shay 49
Quintis Jonespyre – The Mystery of Morrowgrain 50

WoW Newbie Quest Guide – Tauren, Mulgore

Camp Narache

Start by looking around the camp for the first two quests: Grull Hawkwind – the Hunt Begins and Chief Hawkwind – a Humble Task. These are probably the only two tasks available at level 1. Head SE to the well (looks a little like a windmill), and hunt as you go. Once you have met the old lady, run back to camp.

The next couple of quests: Chief Hawkwind – Rites of the Earthmother; this is the start of a big series of quests that will last until you are finished in Mulgore. Grull Hawkwind – the Hunt Continues, and the level 2 class quest (for a shaman, this will be Rune Inscribed Note). Visit your trainer, pick up any new spells or abilities. Then head south to fight cougars, and to meet Seer Greytongue, who has a house in the hills.

More quests: Seer Greytongue – Rite of Strength, Grull Hawkwind – the Battleboars, Brave Windfeather – Break Sharptusk! Head east to the ravine. You can climb over the cliffs to reach it, but you will fall in and can’t get back out the same way. The correct entry is through the short cave passage just south of the ravine; the cave entry/exit are marked on the map. Sharptusk is in the large hut east along the ravine.

If you are a shaman: Seer Ravenfeather – Call of Earth (shaman class quest, requires level 4, several stages). The shamans spawn one at a time in the hut north of the cave entry, as well as near Sharptusk. You should easily reach level 6 this point, with under 2 hours played.

To lead you out of Camp Narache, collect Chief Hawkwind – Rites of the Earthmother. On the road to Bloodhoof, SW of Camp Narache, pick up: Antur Fallow – a Task Unfinished.

Bloodhoof Village

In Bloodhoof, register with the inn, and look around to locate your class trainer, and any profession trainers that you are interested in. Start with Baine Bloodhoof – Rite of Vision, which leads to Zarlman Two-Moons – Rite of Vision. Harken Windtotem – Swoop Hunting; this takes a while, as they aren’t common. Mull Thunderhorn – Poison Water, Maur Raincaller – Mazzranache; this requires uncommon drops, and in particular a cougar femur; the lowest cougars will be level 7 and 8, which is a couple of levels above the mobs required for the rest of the drops. Cougars are found both to the east of Bloodhoof, and also north, on the way to Thunder Bluff. The well quests are another series that will last for the rest of your stay in Mulgore.

Head to the well, SE of village, then NE of well for another quest, you will find walking along the path: Morin Cloudstalker – the Ravaged Caravan.

Back to Bloodhoof and meet Mull Thunderhorn – Winterhoof Cleansing (the well to the SE). Baine Bloodhoof – Sharing the Land; there are three palemane camps, a cave to the west, an outdoors camp to the SSW (highest mob is Snaggletooth, 9 elite), and another camp east of this one. However, I only found poachers in the camp directly south of the well. Pick up before you leave Bloodhoof: Ruul Eagletalon – Dangers of the Windfury 8. Now kill harpies in SE (7-8), directly E of the palemane camps.

At this point I was level 8, with 3-4 hours played. I was also short of money for my spells, although the palemanes and harpies made up for this with cash and linen drops. Total time played was still under 7 hours to 10.

Next you should take: Mull Thunderhorn – Thunderhorn Totem. If you still need a cougar femur, you can get it now.

Next are a series of quests that can all be done together in the same area: Mull Thunderhorn – Thunderhorn Cleansing, Blaine Bloodhoof – Dwarven Digging (requires level 6 to accept), Zarlman Two-Moons – Rite of Vision. Start with the rite, the first components can be gather south of the village safely, and the next stage is at the campfire: you will have to run NW to Seer Wiserunner – Rite of Wisdom. Then go south of the cave for the dwarves (Bael’Dun Digsite). The dwarf quest will involve you holding a stack of 5 picks until you can reach a forge; there isn’t one in Bloodhoof, but there are forges in both Thunder Bluff (much later), and outside the Venture Mine; there may or may not be a forge in the dig site, I am not sure. Then you can go south to Palemane Rock (if you haven’t already), or east to Ravaged Caravan. It is marginally less trouble to approach the caravan from the north, rather than out of the lake; the box of supplies is in the in middle of the camp site. Thunderhorn Well is between the dig site and the caravan, north of the village. Back to the village to sell and collect rewards, then along the path to the east again for Morin Cloudstalker – Fizsprocket’s Clipboard, The Venture Co. This area is east of the caravan location. The required mobs are level 8-10. The mine has two entrances, and Fizsprocket is much closer to one entrance (the eastern one?) than the other.

More quests: Skorn Whitecloud – The Hunter’s Way, Mull Thunderhorn – Wildmane Totem. Level 9-10 mobs for this. Clear this in the SE near the exit to the Barrens, and on the way north past the Venture Mining Co to Red Rocks. SE of the burial site you will find Lorekeeper Raintotem – A Sacred Burial. While doing this quest, you can complete an older one: Rite of Wisdom, by talking to the Ancient Spirit in the middle of the burial ground.

Thunder Bluff

If you haven’t already, now is a good time to visit Thunder Bluff, as several of the later quests are either in this area, or collected from here.

Before leaving Bloodhoof, make sure that you have: Mull Thunderhorn – Wildmane Cleansing.

In Thunder Bluff, collect: Eyahn Eagletalon – Preparation for Ceremony; for this you will want to go to the extreme N and NW to kill harpies, levels 9-11. The Wildmane Water well is also in the area, south of the harpies.

When back in Thunder Bluff, the last quest to complete before leaving Mulgore will be: Cairne Bloodhoof – Arra’chea. This is a level 11 kodo, which roams the area between Thunder Bluff and Red Rocks. Start by looking at the SE corner of Thunder Bluff, at the base of the cliffs; Arra’chea is most often found close to where the scroll around the Thunder Bluff marker on the map appears.

Finally, back in Thunder Bluff collect a few quests for later: head to Hunter’s Rise (this one the separate mesa to the SE): Melor Stonehoof – Sergra Darkthorn (Barrens), then Elder Rise (NE): Rahauro – Testing an Enemies Strength (elite), Searching for the Lost Satchel (elite). These latter two are both in Orgrimmar, Ragefire Chasm. And also: Arch Druid Hamuul Runetotem – The Barrens Oases (Barrens)

When I left, total played time was 11 hours, level 13; I had skipped Fizsprockets Clipboard only.

As a shaman, I also had taken: Narm Skychaser – Call of Fire (shaman level 10 quest), which sends you into The Barrens. This one is best completed at 12+, although you can start to collect the quest at 10.

Leave to the Barrens along the road to the east. Once in the Barrens, you should collect at the first small village, Kirge Sternhorn – Journey to the Crossroads. Head from there north to the Crossroads.

Hunter Talents

All of that aside though you are going to, without a doubt, want to invest points into Improved Aspect of the Hawk (Beastmastery) and Improved Hunters Mark (Marksmanship). These are the staple of your most important weapons (rifle/bow) and you’re going to want to get these sooner or later. I personally focus on Beastmastery early on in order to get Bestial Swiftness as soon as possible. Only because this is probably the most important ability your pet will need when it comes to PvP. If you plan on PvP’ing that is. I would recommend maxing out Improved Aspect of the Hawk, then Bestial Discipline and then get Bestial Swiftness. You’re going to want more focus for your pet so he can keep growling to keep aggro and you’re going to want to have a higher power ranking for your rifle and this path get’s that for you quickly. Afterwards I would work on Efficiency (Marksmanship) and then get to work on your Improved Hunters Mark so that you can get the highest power output for your rifle/bow.

Sniper type, 42 points:
Improved Concussive Shot – 5/5 points
Lethal Shots – 5/5 points
Improved Arcane Shot – 5/5 points
Barrage – 2/2 points
Aimed Shot – 1/1 point
Mortal Shots – 5/5 points
Improved Serpent Sting – 5/5 points
Hawk Eye – 3/3 points
Ranged Weapon Specialization – 5/5 points
Trueshot Aura – 1/1 point
Improved Aspect of the Hawk – 5/5 points

Ambush target, start with aimed shot. Serpent sting, multi shot, arcane shot. Concussive shot if target tries to flee. If hunter’s mark is used, apply after aimed shot.

Melee Build
Survival 25 points
Precision – 5/5 points
Entrapment – 5/5 points
Lightning Reflexes – 3/3 points
Deterrence – 1/1 point
Improved Wing Clip – 5/5 point
Deflection – 5/5 points
Counterattack – 1/1 point

Con: Less ranged/pet damage. Many feel that hunters should not melee.

Complementary options:
Ranged damage, 20 points:
5/5 into lethal and mortal shot
1 point into aimed shot
9 points of prerequisites placed according to player preference, improved concussion shot recommended.

Pet power, 20 points:
Endurance Training – 5/5 points
Bestial Discipline – 5/5 points
Unleashed Fury – 5/5 points
Ferocity – 5/5 points

Pet Based Build

Basic package, 30 points:
Endurance Training – 5/5 points
Bestial Discipline – 5/5 points
Unleashed Fury – 5/5 points

Thick Hide – 5/5 points
Frenzy – 5/5 points <--- Keystone skill, best with fast attack pet.

Stonetalon Mountains, Horde

You will be entering from the Barrens. Although it is possible to enter from Ashenvale, this isn’t ideal for your first time. There is an inn and flight path in Sun Rock Retreat, some way up the main path leading from the SE to NW of the zone.

Before you arrive, there are a few quests worth collecting:

In Ratchet:
Mebok Mizzyrix – Deepmoss Spider Eggs
Sputtervalve – Ziz Fizziks

In Crossroads:
Darsok Swiftdagger – Letter to Jin’Zil

The spider eggs send you to Windshear Crag, which is the far side of Stonetalon Mountains; there are several more quests to collect for this area. Darsok Swiftdagger is at the top of the watchtower in the Crossroads. You can only get his quest when you have completed the harpy quests and killed Serena in the Barrens.

Grimtotem Post

While still in the Barrens, you will meet two NPCs: Makaba Flathoof and Seereth Stonebreak. Take: Makaba Flathoof – Avenge My Village, and follow the path west into Stonetalon Mountains; you will find Grimtotem’s close to the path, look for a spot to the north of the path where there are several around a tent. Come back for: Makaba Flathoof – Kill Grundig Darkcloud. Grundig is in Grimtotem Post, which is to the north of the path a little further west. Use the second entrance to the area, which is to the west, as it is easier (mobs are spaced further apart and are more visible), and Grundig is closer to this end, inside the first tent you see.

Webwinder Path

Before you move on, take: Seereth Stonebreak – Goblin Invaders. As you run up the road, it becomes Webwinder Path. To the south you will see a troll hut on a hill. That area is called Malaka’jin, and Jin’zil is in a cave at the back. Also find: Xen’zilla – Blood Feeders. Creepers (16/17) are in the main path south of Windshear Crag, and Venomspitters (17-19) are north, and in the entrance to the Crag itself, which is to the north of the path. You can also get deepmoss eggs in the Crag; be careful, because they can spawn one or two level 14 hatchlings.

Past the entrance to Windshear Crag on the west is Sun Rock Retreat. There’s an inn, vendors and a flight path. If you take the road out of Sun Rock signposted for the Charred Vale, and veer left, you will find two more NPCs with quests, Mor’rogal and Tsunaman. Take: Mor’rogal – Boulderslide Ravine. The ravine is to the south of the path, way back just west of Malaka’jin, with the correct cave to the west of the two, and you need to get in sight of the resonite cask above the lake at the back of the cavern to complete the task. Mobs are 16-18.

Windshear Crag

Now go back to the Crag for Goblin Invaders. Ziz Fizziks is in the hut on the west side of the entry to the Crag; a quick way of reaching him is to jump down from Webwinder Path, which bypasses a lot of the spiders. Take Ziz Fizziks – Super Reaper 6000. Back in Windshear Crag, you should kill loggers, which are levels 16-18. Work your way to the oversized tractor, which is the super reaper. Around it are several operators; these can also be found at some other points in the area, and any operator can drop the plans – level 20. Be careful as there are several 20-24 elite mobs that can spawn around this area. Ziz will send you back to Sputtervalve in Ratchet, and the follow on quest becomes much higher in level.

The next quest from Mor’rogal is Earthen Arise, which is to break open the cask and kill a 20 elite, Goggeroc. This quest is currently bugged (in April 2005), and if you fail to kill Goggeroc, the cask (big crystal) doesn’t respawn.

Next in line is to find the wanted poster outside Sishir Canyon, which starts off Arachnophobia; this is another elite quest. Besseleth is a level 21 elite, and she is to the right at the back of the canyon. Arguably a lot easier than Gaggeroc.

Returning to Seereth Stonebreak after killing the loggers opens up a couple of quests. Seereth Stonebreak – Shredding Machines, this requires you to kill the 2 goblin machines that roam around the lumbermill area; level 23-24. Seereth Stonebreak – The Elder Crone, sends you to Thunder Bluff and then on to Tarren Mills in Hillsbrad Foothills, with a further quest there to complete. Note that the person you are sent to meet in Thunder Bluff is a Grimtotem! You may already have the flight path to Tarren Mills, in which case there’s no need to run all the way from Undercity. Apothecary Lydon – Blood of Innocents; this requires you to kill the shadow mages around Durnholde Keep, which is south from Tarren Mills, then east across the bridge. The small fort to the south of the road has several shadow mages around the outside, level 21-22, which are easier to reach than those north of the road. You will end up with: Apothecary Zamah (in Thunder Bluff) – The Flying Machine Airport. This is a tower close to the lumbermill.

The Charred Vale

Tammra Windfield – New Life 25 (Charred Vale)
Tsunaman – Elemental War 25 (Charred Vale)
Maggran Earthbinder (Sun Rock) – Harpies Threaten 26 (Charred Vale)

Stonetalon Peak

Tammra Windfield – Cycle of Rebirth 23 (Mirkfallon Lake)
Braelyn Firehand – Cenarius’ Legacy 25 etc
Witch Doctor Jin’zil (Malaka’Jin) – Jin’zil’s Forest Magic 26

Zor Lonetree (Org) – The Spirits of Stonetalon 17 may be orc/troll only?
Kaya Flathoof – Protect Kaya 18 (escort, quest may be bugged)
Makaba Flathoof – Kaya’s Alive 18

Piznik – Gerenzo’s Orders 22
Tsunaman (Sun Rock) – Trouble in the Deeps 22 (etc) BFD?

WoW Newbie Quest Guide – Tauren/Orc/Troll, The Barrens

Leaving Mulgore, you should have the following quests:

Arch Druid Hamuul Runetotem – The Barrens Oases
Melor Stonehoof – Sergra Darkthorn

And leaving Durotar, you will have:

Takrin Pathseeker – Conscript of the Horde

Orcs/trolls continue at Far Watch Post, taurens read on.

Camp Taurajo

Pause here very briefly just to collect one quest: Kirge Sternhorn – Journey to the Crossroads. Then take the road north. The mobs around the south end of the Barrens are higher than those closer to the Crossroads; you’ll see high teens mobs mostly. Watch out for Alliance outriders crossing the road. Closer to Crossroads, you’ll see mob levels drop to around 11-14. Skip down to the Crossroads.

Far Watch Post

Report to Kargal Battlescar after crossing the river, and collect: Kargal Battlescar – Crossroads Conscription. Continue along the road to the Crossroods.

The Crossroads

As soon as you arrive, check in with the inn to set your hearthstone, and run around to complete quests and pick up new ones. There is a delivery series of quests, which will make sure that you are registered for the flight path; these are somewhat quicker and cheaper if you use the hearthstone for one leg of your journey:

Jahan Hawkwing – A Bundle of Hides
Devrak – Ride to Thunder Bluff (Thunder Bluff)
Ahanu (Thunder Bluff) – Tal the Wind Rider Master
Tal (Thunder Bluff) – Return to Jahan

You should ideally do these as soon as you arrive in the Crossroads, so as to get the maximum benefit from the experience they give. However, they may be a tauren only quest. The orc/troll equivalent appears to be:

Zargh – Meats to Orgrimmar
Devrak – Ride to Orgrimmar
Innkeeper Gryshka – Doras the Wind Rider Master
Doras – Return to the Crossroads

Thorn Hill

When you get back, make sure that you have:

Sergra Darkthorn – Plainstrider Menace
Thork – Disrupt the Attacks
Gazrog – Raptor Thieves

Start on these three; you can realistically start solo at 10, but will need to be probably 13 to complete the first razormane quest. Plainstriders are all over, levels 11-12, and the razormane camp is north of the crossroads, to the east before the next east-west road. Mobs are 10-12; the hunters are 11-12 with pets 7-8. The westernmost camp will provide all the kills you need; be careful of the hunters. When you have these two, you will be given: Sergra Darkthorn – The Zhevra, Thork – Supplies for the Crossroads, and Thork – The Disruption Ends.

Zhevra are 13-14, and can be found a little further north than the razormanes (and similarly to the south); they rarely drop a hoof. Mix in kills for: Gazrog – Raptor Thieves. Raptors are less common, but are found in the same general areas, and every kill drops a head.

Back to the razormanes, and you should ideally be 14 or higher for these. Move east along the camp; note that geomancers are in the far east of the razormane camp, and also have the fire tar drop for the shaman quest. The crates for the supplies also spawn in this camp; I believe they can spawn in either the east or southern camps, and possibly in both at the same time. Kreenig Snarlsnout (level 15) spawns in the southern camp, which has higher mobs, up to level 14; I have also seen a 15 elite back there – Elder Mystic Razorsnout.

Oases

Tonga Runetotem – The Forgotten Pools; this is both easy and hard. You can try the sneak approach at possibly as low as 11, but would need to be at least 13 to complete by killing. Before you leave the Crossroads, take: Apothecary Hellbrim – Fungal Spores. Head out the west gate, and find Regthar Deathgate in a building north of the road; Regthar Deathgate – Centaur Bracers. The pools are along the road west out of the Crossroads, but have poor visibility among the vegetation, and are infested with Kolkar and a few raptors. If you can sneak close enough to the oasis, try a death rush into the water, where you may escape pursuit. You are looking for a fissure in the dead centre of the lake; while you are in its area, you can breathe, even though underwater. This leads to: Tonga Runetotem – The Stagnant Oasis (SE). The spores are from the several fungi that spawn at the edge of the oasis; at least one extra fungi spawns south of the hill south of the oasis. If you’d rather kill the Kolkar, be warned that you will often find yourself with two or three if you aren’t very careful.

The Stagnant Oasis is to the south east of the Crossroads, and is a similar task, except that the oasis has level 16 turtles in it. They aren’t hard to kill, even at 14, and you will need to return here for Tonga Runetotem – Altered Beings. The Oasis Snapjaw are 15-16 and are very easy to kill, safe from the kolkar, if you swim to the fissure and use its air bubbles. They have a very small aggro range. This is followed by an easy run around quest, that sends you to Sepulcher in Silverpine Forest then to Thunder Bluff, and primes you to look in Wailing Caverns much later. Combine this with the follow on for Fungal Spores, which also ends you to Thunder Bluff: Apothecary Hellbrim – Apothecary Zamah; it should be no surprise that the next quest sends you to the (non-instanced part of) Wailing Caverns: Apothecary Zamah – Serpentbloom. Zamah is in the undead Pools of Vision area of Spirit Rise in Thunder Bluff; it is best reached from the lower entrance to the rise.

Ratchet

Time to meet some goblins. Make sure that you have: Apothecary Hellbrim – Wharfmaster Dizzywig. Take the road east out of the Crossroads. In Ratchet, note the bank there if you want to store any loot. Take Gazlowe – Southsea Freebooters; these are south along the coast from Ratchet, and you can find a path leading to them from the upper row of merchants. Come back for: Gazlowe – The Missing Shipment, which turns into Gazlowe – Stolen Booty, and check the wanted poster for: Baron Longshore.

The crates for Stolen Booty spawn at the tents in the farthest two (of four) camps. Baron Longshore is 16, and can presumably spawn at any of the camps (he was at the second for me, and I have heard of him at the fourth). I’d want to be 13 or higher for the first quest, and probably 16 for the Baron, because of the likelihood of multiple pulls and adds.

If you are a herbalist, Medbok Mizzyrix – Root Samples; this is easy to do at any time. In fact, pick up any quest you can, as you’ll want to use them later.

The Dry Hills

Start with finding Darsok Swiftdagger in the Crossroads; he is at the top of the watchtower, and many people miss him. Then it’s time to go to the far north west of the Barrens for Darsok Swiftdagger – Harpy Raiders, which leads to Darsok Swiftdagger – Harpy Lieutenants. For the first quest, level are 14-16; the second, you have to make your way through the lower harpies first, and then slayers are 16-17.

Cats, Kolkar and Raptors

Start with Sergra Darkthorn – Prowlers of the Barrens. They are in several locations in the Barrens, but the suggested area southwest of Crossroads is OK, and probably the closest. Like the other cats, prowlers like to lie in the shade in long grass and around trees, so be very careful of what you are pulling.

Finish the centaur bracers if you haven’t already, and scan the area of the oasis for Barak Kodobane, level 16, for Regthar Deathgate – Kolkar Leaders.

This leads to: Sergra Darkthorn – Echeyakee. You have to kill a named white cat, level 16. He spawns in the kodo bones north east of the mountain bahind Grol’dom Farm when you use the horn that Sergra gives you. The cats here spawn fast and roam across the bones, so you want to pull him back onto the slope of the mountain to kill. This would be a good grind spot around level 14-17, if you need one.

Now take: Sergra Darkthorn – The Angry Scytheclaws, and make sure that you have Mankrik – Lost in Battle, and from Ratchet: Mebok Mizzyrix – Raptor Horns. This is easy enough if you are 16 or 17. The scytheclaws are level 17-18, with a few lower. You will need three feathers that seem to drop from any raptors, not just the ones you are told. The three nests are in fact all next to each other, just a very short way east of the road just north of the bridge to South Barrens, south of the Crossroads. The raptor horns are relatively rare drops. Manrik’s wife is at the huts on the west just south of the bridge. The raptors are very close together but will single pull. Back in Ratchet, Mebok gives you yet another Wailing Caverns quest (Mebok Mizzyrix – Smart Drinks).

To find the Raptor Grounds for Gazrog – Stolen Silver, follow the gully east from the bridge on South Gold Road, just by the nest above. Just before you reach Northwatch Hold, you will see what seems to be a tent guarded by two raptors to the south. Each tent has two raptors guarding it, with one wanderer from the back to the front, but the last tent has three raptors; all 17-18. Pull the wanderer first, and you should be able to get most single, but be prepared for a double pull. The final tent you can very carefully pull the third raptor first, but the last two will come together. The silver is in a chest right there. You can exit the canyon at the back of the tents, if you wish.

Sludge Fen

You need to have Sputtervalve – Samophlange. This quest is really a series of quests that involves the Venture Company buildings to the west of Sludge Fen (which is in the north east). The easiest way to reach it is to run north from the Crossroads, and turn right just as the road kinks to the left, just before the north outpost. You need to clear to the machine to the west first. There are several parts of the machine that you must click on in order to complete the quest. Start with the control console, which is on the south side in the middle, and looks like a box with levers. The next three parts are small wheels on different parts of the machine; read the book you were given with the quest for descriptions. The first wheel is low down on the west side, then a wheel at the north side, and finally the east side; then back to the control console. The enemies here are relatively low level, mostly 13-14; you could combine this with the first harpies quest to save a trip north if you wanted. I’d want to be at least 15, possibly 16, to make this short quest series worthwhile.

Once you have finished this sequence, you need to clear to the small building to the east. Inside the hut is the level 16 named you need to kill. Loot the key, then back to the control console. From there, it’s back to Sputtervalve in Ratchet.

Pick up Wharfmaster Dizzywig – Miner’s Fortune while you are in Ratchet. Sputtervalve sends you to Wenikee Boltbucket, who is just south of the outpost before Ashenvale, which is up the north road, only a little way past the Samophlange machine. She wants: Wenikee Boltbucket – Nugget Slugs. These come from tool buckets at Sludge Fen, most mobs 14-16 here. The buckets can drop up to three slugs, so having to collect 15 isn’t quite as bad as it sounds. The respawn of the buckets is very slow, so work your way around the site and carefully kill in to each bucket as you get to it. Avoid the much higher mobs at the mine and building north of the site. On the north side of the fen is a goblin robot broken down with a quest marker on it: Wizzlecrank’s Shredder – Ignition. When you work your way to the south side after making a complete circuit, you will probably still have one or more slugs to collect. Start to kill up the ramp to the platform in the middle of the fen; you are likely to get two at once in a couple of places, so I’d wait for 18 to clear this area. On the first level is another bucket, and the supervisor (level 18) you need to kill. Wizzlecrank’s Shredder – Ignition. I also found Chen’s Empty Keg close to the south side ramp here, although I believe it can spawn at many points in the Barrens. Take it to Brewmaster Drohn in Ratchet for an easy quest: Brewmaster Drohn – Chen’s Empty Keg. The hardest part is the Thunder Lizard; these are levels 18+ in South Barrens.

When you return to Wenikee Boltbucket, she wants you to go to Orgrimmar: Wenikee Boltbucket – Rilli Greasygob. This results in: Rilli Greasygob – Samophlange Manual. Take the Talon Gate out of Orgrimmar, and the mine you need (the Boulder Lode Mine) is right there to your west. The miners (overseers and enforcers) are 16-18, and you will get the pages for the manual very quickly. Again, getting two at once is relatively common until you have an area killed; respawn is fast, I could only clear one side of the outside of the mine (roughly 6-8 enemies). However, the Cat’s Eye Emerald will take some time; I have heard of people getting it on their first or second kill; all I can say is that I killed at least 30, and earned half a level at 19 before I got it. The reward includes a six slot bag.

Pilot Wizzlecrank – The Escape 18 escort?

Camp Taurajo and South Barrens

This series is not too hard at 18, up to the visit to Mahren Skyseer, whereupon it jumps several levels. By now, you should have: Sergra Darkthorn – Jorn Skyseer. Jorn is in Camp Taurajo to the south, where taurens enter the Barrens for the first time. Jorn will give you: Jorn Skyseer – Ishamuhale. So haul yourself back to Ratchet, and kill a zehra on the way; I got my carcass on the first kill. West of Ratchet there is an escarpment leading north; you want to be up on that plateau. Roughly half way between Ratchet and the next road is a big hill (Thorn Hill, in fact). Close to it there will be level 16 prowler matriarchs. Directly east of the hill is a big dead tree. Clear around it: mostly hyenas, raptors and a few lower level cats. Then right click the zehra carcass in your inventory. Ishamuhale spawns nearby, level 19.

Back in Camp Taurajo: Jorn Skyseer – Enraged Thunder Lizards. These are on the east side of the South Gold Road, ranging from 22 just south of the camp, down to 18 by the little bridge. I got my three drops in about six kills. Jorn Skyseer – Cry of the Thunderhawk. These range from 19 in the north, going up in level. My wing dropped on the second kill. Jorn Skyseer – Mahren Skyseer. She is in the hut on the coast just east of the first pirate camp south of Ratchet; you can reach it by climbing over the hill without aggroing the pirates. The path can be a little hard to make out if you don’t know it. She wants you to kill a level 27 sea monster (Mahren Skyseer – Isha Awak), so this can wait.

Now it is time for: Mankrik – Consumed by Hatred (Manrik is in the Crossroads), and also Mangletooth – Tribes at War. The best place for water seekers is the camp closest to the road north of Camp Taurajo (and west of the road), called Agama’gor. For the remaining kills, try the two camps directly east of the road at the same place, a little north at Taurajo; this is called Bramblescar. Avoid the tent. Save the blood shards that drops from the quillboars. for Mangletooth – Blood Shards of Agamaggan. If you look on Allakhazam or Thottbot, it looks like there are a lot of follow on quests at this point, but each is really just a buff from Mangletooth in exchange for several blood shards (4-10). Finally, he gives: Mangletooth – Betrayal From Within.

When it’s time to leave

You have a choice to make: Stonetalon Mountains, or Ashenvale. For a shaman, your water totem quest requires you to go to Ashenvale, but you may choose Stonetalon for levelling and questing purposes. Most of the quests leading you our of the Barrens are directed to Stonetalon Mountains.

For Ashenvale: Thork – Report to Kadrak. Kadrak in in the outpost in the far north of the Barrens, just before Ashenvale. He gives you quests to lead you around Ashenvale to the Zoram Strand, and more quests there for low 20s. Kadrak – The Warsong Reports. From Orgrimmar, Warcaller Gorlach – The Ashenvale Hunt; this is just report to Splintertree Post, just north of the border.

For Stonetalon Mountains, start with two quests in Ratchet: Mebok Mizzyrix – Deepmoss Spider Eggs, and Sputtervalve – Ziz Fizziks. The spider eggs send you to Windshear Crag, which is the far side of Stonetalon Mountains, and it may almost be easier to enter from the path from Ashenvale to reach them. You will also want, from the watch tower in Crossroads: Darsok Swiftdagger – Letter to Jin’Zil. You can only get this when you have completed the harpy quests and killed Serena.

Stonetalon Mountains, Night Elf

The Alliance quests in Ashenvale include several that want to send you into Stonetalon Mountains.

Faldreas Goeth’Shael – Journey to Stonetalon Peak;
Sentinel Thenysil – On Guard in Stonetalon;
Shindrell Swiftfire – Pridewings of Stonetalon.

Windshear Crag

The first section has you meet Kaela and Gaxim. They are to the south of your entry point to the zone, Windshear Crag, behind a bluff looking down on the pass south out of the crag. Collect Gaxim Rustfizzle – A Gnome’s Respite. Go back into the valley to the north and kill the humanoids (mostly goblins, I think). After you check back in with Gaxim, he’ll give you two more travel quests: Gaxim Rustfizzle – A Scroll From Mauren, and An Old Colleague. These send you to Stormwind and Ironforge, respectively.

Stonetalon Lake

Oncde you have these quests, continue on to the NW, along Webwinder Path, around Mirkfallon Lake, to Stonetalon Lake. Collect the new flight path, and complete your other quest here; try to remember that the only vendors in Stonetalon are by the griffons at Stonetalon Lake. The pridewings around the lake are level 20-23, slightly higher than the 19-20 uncommon young pridewings in the Crag. All can drop the venom sacs for the remaining quest, but they are uncommon at best. Watch out for the Pridewing Patriarch, a level 25 elite.

When you are happy, travel off to Stormwind and Ironforge. Next in line will be: Collin Mauren – Devils in Westfall, Retrieval For Mauren. Gaxim’s contact will ask you for 4 minor mana potions, and 2 minor fortitude. The latter can only be made via alchemy; there is one vendor for the mana potions, Dawn Brightstar in the Tower of Azora, in Elwynn Forest (limited supply). You should leave Stormwind with: Collin Mauren – Retrieval for Mauren.

Covert Ops

When you get back, you’ll be given: Gaxim Rustfizzle – Covert Ops – Alpha and Covert Ops – Beta, together with a Covert Ops Pack, containing plans, 2 detonators (red and blue) and 2 explosives. Start with Alpha, the lumbermill NE of the deforestation machine. The plans are a scroll on a table/crate at one corner of the (open) mill. The wagon is south of the mill, with sparkling fireworks on top of it. It is best to position yourself between the wagon and the mine before detonating it. However… I wasn’t able to place the explosives, no matter what I did or where I stood. Instead, I just killed my way to the plans, which were at the SW corner of the lumbermill.

For Beta, the wagon is NE of the mine (which is at the west end of the lake). The letters are on a crate in front of the (lower, to the east) mine entrance; you do not need to enter the mine. The problem is that the mobs will run close to you and may very well aggro, and several mobs will stay behind; at least three of them were close to the plans. You also can’t get most of the subsequent quests without completing Covert Ops.

When you do, these two quests will be available to you:

Kaela Shadowspear – Enraged Spirits
Kaela Shadowspear – Wounded Ancients

Charred Vale

Back to Mirkfallon Lake and take the west path with the three quests for Charred Vale; Enraged Spirits, Retrieval for Mauren, and Wounded Ancients. The elementals and basilisks are 23-28, ancients 25-27. However, there is a strict gradient in level, increasing as you get closer to Desolace. The elementals north of the Vale are 23 and rare 24, as are the basilisks. You will only find ancients in the Vale, where there is a high population density of 24+ harpies. The basilisk quest will go slowly if you don’t enter the Vale, but is still very possible to complete at a low level.

You can then take: Kaela Shadowspear – Update for Sentinel Thenysil (in Astranaar, Ashenvale), which leads to: Sentinel Thenysil – Reception from Tyrande (in the Temple of the Moon, Darnassus).

The mob density in the Charred Vale and Windshear Crag make this area tough for the appropriate levels, and the Covert Ops quests didn’t quite work out for me (or for many others, who have posted on Allakhazam). There is also a LOT of running around to get started on the series quests.

Long Journeys

Night Elf to Ironforge/Stormwind City

There are two routes to Alliance territory: for both, start by taking the boat to Menethil Bay in the Wetlands. Of the two, the road route is better and much faster.

The much shorter run is to head along the road (generally in an eastward direction) to Dun Algaz. Mobs on the roads are 22-23 or so, and mobs in Dun Algaz are 20+, but should be avoidable or outrun with care. Enter Loch Modan at Algaz Station (that’s the North gate pass from Dun Morogh). There are griffon masters in Menethil Bay, Thelsamar (in Loch Modan), and Ironforge. While you are there, take the tram to Stormwind and learn the flight path as well.

Or: from Menethil Bay, you can swim south. Stay far out to sea, on the edge of the fatigue line, as there is a camp of murlocs just west of the harbour; I am not sure if this will succeed or not, but it stands a better chance than running along the shore. From there, you eventually swim in and out of Wetlands, Dun Morogh, Westfall and Stormwind City, ending up on the north beach of Westfall, from where you can learn the flight path at Sentinel Hill and run to Stormwind City. This is a very long and tedious swim, utterly devoid of mobs until you hit the beach. There are several places where you can climb ashore, but none break through to the interior. It may be possible to swim out to sea to die of fatigue/drowning, and respawn at a graveyard in one of these zones; but it seemed most likely to me that you would end up back in the Wetlands.

Once you know the way:

Start in Auberdine, Darkshore; take the boat to Menethil Bay, Wetlands. From there take a flight to Ironforge. Optionally take the tram to Stormwind City, but you are probably taking this route to get to the auction house. Reverse to get back – or use your hearthstone.

Night Elf to Booty Bay

Take the boat from Auberdine to Menethil Bay, Wetlands, and from there the boat to Theramore, in Dustwallow Marsh. Short run north into the Barrens. Alternatively, run south from Ashenvale into the Barrens, and take the boat from Ratchet to Booty Bay.

Others

Not many journeys are quite as epic. A low level tauren can relatively easily reach Orgrimmar, and thence Undercity, by simply running from Mulgore into the Barrens and then Durotar. The same applies in reverse.
